Freelancers report that they feel they have more control over their careers, schedules and workload.

Before the pandemic, self-employment was a popular employment option. In 2019, 57 million Americans (about 35% of the US workforce) were self-employed. And of those 57 million freelancers, 60% said they were self-employed by choice, not necessity.

According to a FlexJobs survey of freelancers, 84% of respondents say having flexible hours is the main benefit of freelance work. Skilled self-employed workers are expected to earn more than 70 percent of American workers per hour. And 51% of freelancers in a survey of the freelancers union said that no amount of money would induce them to take a traditional job.
